There is nothing quite like a small town romance. This was a sweet and sexy book. It shows that love can heal when a tragedy has occurred. It gives you all the feels.... anger, sadness, a little annoyed (talk to the police), understanding, hotness and love. I really enjoy a good love story and I think everyone deserves a Noah. His love for Emma Jean was real and lasting.

Let's just hit the ground running with this review, shall we? Noah and Emma Jean are absolute perfection. Their love story is far from perfect. But their devotion, commitment and hot as heck chemistry fills in all of the imperfections left behind from time and an awful husband. From start to finish, Taking Shelter took my breath away. I laughed, I cried. And I swooned. Hard.

Story Line Emma Jean and Noah go back - way back. Like high school way back. He's her best friend Tally's (Medicine Wheel Book #1) older brother. Noah missed his chance to make Emma his all those years ago. And what happened? She married the schmuck he made his move first. Fast forward to present day and Emma Jean has left the beast. Trust me when I say this - beast isn't a strong enough word for the man she married. But, collective sigh of relief here, she's free. She's protected. And now it's time to heal. Physically as well as mentally. The things Emma went through are what scary movies are made of. It's every woman's worst nightmare come to life. Reading about what she endured is what brought on the waterworks. My heart felt like it was being squeezed to death. Seriously. Her previous home life was described with such detail and emotion, it was impossible not to feel like I was living Emma's life too. But Taking Shelter isn't just about this strong as Hades woman showing the world just how strong she is. No, it's about a second chance at true love. And THAT'S why Emma Jean and Noah's love story perfection.

Interaction Oh Noah. Just saying his name has me swooning at my keyboard. Noah makes his feelings for Emma Jean clear from the get-go. But he has an underlying gentle element to his he-man personality. I guess what I'm trying to say is he's a big ol' teddy bear. He's tough, he takes change, gets what he wants, but when it comes to Emma Jean? Total softy. He knows after everything she has been through, he can't just jump into bed with her. But he also pretty much tells her they are going to be a "thing" whether she likes it or not. Now, before you say, wow that's pretty alpha, let me set the record straight. He tells her they're together - however, he then tells her they're going to take things as slow as she wants. See? Teddy Bear. Bottom line? Noah just made my top 5 favorite book boyfriends list.

Laundry Obviously, Noah and Emma Jean don't get down and naughty on page 1. Their chemistry sizzles in this slow burn until they ignite like a dang forth of July show. Noah is everything you ever wanted in a book boyfriend. He knows when to be sweet and he knows when to be downright naughty. MMMMmmmm. So delicious.

Depth Emma Jean's previous home life brings so much depth to their story. Even after walking away from her low life jack wagon of a husband, that pain he caused her doesn't just go away. It lingers in every sense of the word. Which then makes her healing process take even longer. Now, remember this is a country themed book, so Tally's horse farm is visited and a certain part of this book made my heart sing. BJ references Emma Jean going to the barn to visit - however for me it was so much more than that. Equine therapy is real and in college I was privileged enough to volunteer at two barns that offered it. I'm a firm believer in the healing powers of these magnificent 1000 pound animals. And I adored that Emma used animals in her healing process. It was beautiful.

Love is a fickle thing. It’s hard work, and it’s a lot of work. Sometimes, we find someone we think is worthy of our love. We put so much time and devotion into this person, we can ignore the signs. We may see that darkness in them, but we believe we can fix someone, help them get better; We can be the person that chases away the clouds from their eyes. Be the light to their dark. And then they change. Something in them flips. The person we fell in love with wholeheartedly is someone different, and scary.

This is what happened to Emma Jean. She long ago fell in love with the football superstar. She pushed her feelings for long time crush Noah away, and went on a date that sealed her fate. Almost seven years later, she escaped the hell that had become her life before she even realized what was happening. What once was love became bitter hatred and fear.

Noah has long harbored feelings for his Sunshine. At one time, he believed he’d have his chance when Cody showed his true nature, but by then it was too late for his Emma and their love. Seven years later, he never let that love go. Never found someone who could encompass the love he felt for Emma. When the opportunity presents itself to not only save Emma from her hell, but also give their chemistry a chance to blossom, Noah takes it.

Emma has a long road ahead of her. Not only does she need to learn to love herself, she has to discover who she is. The path she was on long ago was deviated, so what did she do with her path suddenly wide open again? Her friends don’t let her hide, and neither does Noah. But does loving Noah mean losing herself? Again?

Noah’s road is more like a mountain to climb. He has to show Noah she’s worthy of love from those surrounding her, as well as worthy of being the woman she would have been had Cody not lured her into his clutches. He’s a determined alpha, possessive, but understanding of her plight. He may be a crazed man when it comes to his girl, but he knows she needs her independence, and doesn’t try to put her in the “victim” box.

This book was emotional, with the same blending of past and present the first in the series, Coming Home, had. It was full of sweet, tender moments, as well as ones that allowed Emma Jean to take back her life and sexuality.

This was four stars instead of five for me because ultimately, I would have liked to have seen more of Emma’s past with Cody. She had no money, no job, no way to get out. But why did she fall in love with him? What drew her in? We saw few of the interactions between the couple, but I felt left out of Emma’s personal bubble and I wanted more of it.

Though that’s really no different from any other book. I always want more, and a book with a woman who suffered from abuse? You could write a whole book just on that.
